Cambodia

Description

Cambodia is a country in Southeastern Asia, bordered by Thailand to the west and northwest, Laos to the northeast and Vietnam to the east and southeast. The Mekong river dominates the geography of Cambodia, while the Tonle Sap(a fresh water lake) is a very important source of fish for the country. Cambodia has temperatures ranging from 10 degrees Celsius to 38 degrees Celsius and experiences tropical monsoons. The best months to visit Cambodia are November to January when temperatures and humidity are lower.

The politics of Cambodia take place in the framework of a parliamentary, representative democratic monarch. The Prime Minister of Cambodia is the head of government and of a multi-party system, while the king is the head of state. The King appoints the Prime Minister and the Prime Minister and his ministerial appointees exercise executive power in government. Legislative power is vested in the executive and the two chambers of parliament, The National Assembly of Cambodia and the Senate.

Khmer culture dominates Cambodia with distinct styles of dance, architecture and sculpture. A good example of Khmer architecture is the Angkor Wat (city temple) which is the best preserved temple discovered in this region. There is an annual boat rowing contest, Bonn Om Teuk, which is the most attended Cambodian national festival. Ten percent of the population attends and participates in playing games, watching fireworks and attending the boat race. Professional, organized sports are not customary in Cambodia but soccer is the most popular played sport just for entertainment purposes.
