Program Description

COURSE INFORMATION:

Students take 6 credits of JWST 300. The first 3 credits are for the seminar work completed in Charleston prior to departure and during the 10 days in Germany; the second 3 credits is for independent research to be completed upon return.

PROGRAM INFORMATION:

This intensive program offers an introduction to and then in-depth, on-site exploration of issues related to German-Jewish history and culture since the Enlightenment, with an emphasis on the region of Berlin in the periods before, during and after the Holocaust. The course will examine issues related to German-Jewish identity at the intersection of history, culture, art, philosophy, politics, religion, and geography (urban studies).

The course will begin with a week of daily seminar, readings, discussion, and lecture at the College of Charleston, and then transition to a 10-day long intensive tour of German-Jewish Berlin and the surrounding region, where students will gain hands-on experience with the course and choose a topic for a final research paper to be completed upon their return.

The daily schedule in Berlin will include a good deal of public transportation usage and walking.
