Program Description

COURSE INFORMATION:

Students take the following two courses:

COMM 336: Addressing Problems in Context - Cross-Cultural Communication - 3 credits
WGST 320: Gender Issues in the European Union - 3 credits

PROGRAM INFORMATION:

Participants in this program will spend a month living and studying in Florence, Italy; Munich, Germany; and Salzburg, Austria. Students will study cross-cultural communication and gender studies while immersed in two of Western Europe's major cultural traditions: Tuscan Italian and Southern German. The Cross-Cultural Communication course provides students with a foundation in intercultural commuication theory while focusing attention on both the challenges and rewards of cross-cultural interaction. The Gender Issues in the European Union course explores both historical and contemporary gender issues in the various countries of the EU, though focusing particular attention on gender issues in Austria, Germany, and Italy.

This program affords students exposure to three different communities as we travel and allows for significant comparison and analysis of both communication and gender issues. These studies will be enriched by excursions to such important cultural and historical sites as the Palazzo Vecchio (Florence) and the Dachau Concentration Camp (Germany). Florence, Munich and Salzburg are among Europe's most beautiful and charming cities. Each has a wealth of cultural, education, and recreational amenities, attracting students and scholars from around the world.

Participants should be able to carry their own luggage and participate in frequent long walks.
