PSYC 315/410: The Developing Child: The Role of Culture and Community - 3 credits

PROGRAM INFORMATION:

This program involves an exploration of eastern culture through the lens of Cambodia and Vietnam. We will examine how both cultures have worked to recover from the ravages of war (which, for Cambodia, included a mass genocide), as well as how the socio-cultural, political, and economic environments they have created influence (positively and negatively) the developmental experiences and trajectories of their youth. In Cambodia, we will visit places like Tuol Sleng (S-21) and Choeng Ek (the “Killing Fields”), as well as the temples of the ancient Angkorian Emprire (such as Angkor Wat). We will meet with local NGO’s and volunteer in a local village. In Vietnam, we will visit cities like Hanoi, as well as villages in the northernmost regions of the country, near SaPa. We will participate in local culture, both traditional and contemporary.

For those of you signing up for the Elephant Valley Project week, we will also travel to outside Sen Monorrom, in the northern part of Cambodia, to volunteer with an elephant rescue reserve for 3 days and 2 nights.
