Estimated Costs: In addition to the program fee, students will be charged tuition for their courses.

The out of state tuition for classes associated with travel are discounted from the Fall and Spring rates.

Scholarships up to $1,500 are available to support CofC degree seeking students. Eligibility is based on demonstrated financial need, academic merit, 2 faculty recommendations and a personal statement. Program Description

COURSE INFORMATION:

DANC 290: ST: Dancing Through Scandinavia (3 cr)

PROGRAM INFORMATION:

Students will have course meetings in Charleston for the first two days before departing on May 16. Dancing through Scandinavia is a special topics course designed to fulfill the humanities requirement at the College of Charleston. This course will begin at the College, spending the first few days of Maymester classes ensuring that all student understand the purpose of the trip and receive thorough background information on the area sin which we will be traveling. Student s are reading information on dance history in Norway, Sweden, And Denmark, and are required to submit written reports detailing their understanding of why these locations are significant to the development of dance as an art forms. The trip begins with the Royal Danish Ballet (RDB) and Danish Dance Theatre, two of the most respected companies in Copenhagen, Denmark. Students will have the opportunity to take dance classes, meet with various faculty and researchers, and tour the RDB facilities to learn more about their contribution to Danish dance history . Student swill also watch performances by both companies, and have the opportunity to explore RDB archives. After Denmark, we travel to Oslo, Norway, where studnets will take classes with Carte Blanche (a contemporary dance company in Norway) and watch their company perform. They will also explore the archives at the Dance Info Norway, an organization which houses the largest collection of Norwegian dance histoory in the country. Students will also learn the traditional folk dances of Norway. Finally, we travel to Stockholm, Sweden, to see the Royal Swedish Ballet, led by world-renowned contemporary ballet choreographer Mats Ek. Students will see the company perform and tour the theatre. Our last performance we see is Culberg Ballet. While in Stockholm, students will have the opportunity to take dance classes from various professionals. Throughout their travels, students are required to keep extensive journals and participate in scheduled discussions about their experiences abroad.

Students will have several opportunities to participate in dance technique master classes in ballet, contemporary//modern, and Scandinavian folk dance. Students should be in adequate health to meet the physical demands of these classes, and will be guided into appropriate-level classes based on their prior experience in dance.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS:

-Students must have an overall GPA of 2.5
-Students must already possess a valid passport, or be able to obtain a valid passport

Dr. McLaine has previously traveled abroad with students to Germany and Italy while researching various areas of dance history, and was Program Director for CIE's 2016 Dancing through Europe Maymester course. An avid dance historian, Dr. McLaine has studied the development of ballet and contemporary dance for many years. She has previously organized many domestic travel experiences for students and is excited to share her love of dance history with students who also wish to experience the development of dance as an art form by visiting some of its richest history.
