Program Description

COURSE INFORMATION:

Students take the following two courses:

CLAS 121: Classical Greece - 3 credits
CLAS 203: Greek Beliefs and Practices - 3 credits

PROGRAM INFORMATION:

Students will travel briskly through a country whose natural beauty is surpassed only by the depth of its contributions to human flourishing. We will read selections from Homer, Sophocles, Thucydudes, and Plato as we travel around the dramatic Greek landscape. The program begins in Athens, where we will ascend the Athenian acropolis to marvel at the Parthenon and, afterwards, travel down to the harbor of the Piraeus, the epicenter of one of the first naval empires in history. After our stay in Athens, the program will move through mainland Greece (Nafplio, Olympia, Delphi) as we study the cultural forces that birthed the classical world. The second half of the program will take us into the isles of Greece (Santorini, Naxos, Mykonos, Delos) and finally back to Athens. The climax will be our final evening - sunset over the glorious cape of Sunio.

Students should expect light hiking on mountainous terrain.
