Program Description

COURSE INFORMATION:

Students will be enrolled in a one credit course called EDFS 300: T.A.L.E.S. in Jamaica - Creating Stories and Lessons to Teach Content and Culture.

PROGRAM INFORMATION:

T.A.L.E.S., Teaching and Learning with Engaging Stories, is an alternative teaching method that focuses on enhancing learning by teaching through story. Over the course of two years, T.A.L.E.S. stories have been created by education majors, science majors, and faculty during summer workshops, and shared with disadvantaged students in low performing schools. This course will focus on T.A.L.E.S. in Jamaica. The students will visit, learn, and collect resources (notes, videos, photos, etc.) about the Jamaican culture through the arts, geography, history, and architecture. In teams students will use their collected resources, content knowledge, and imagination to create stories and integrated lesson plans that teach Jamaican culture and specific core content chosen from South Carolina K-8 standards and indicators.

Students will need to be able to hike the Holywell Park Trail in the Blue Mountains as well as take a guided trip to Dunn's River Falls and the Blue Hole. A full program itinerary is attached above under "Documents."
