Program Description

COURSE INFORMATION:

Students will be enrolled in one of the following courses:

CHEM 283: Special Topics: Tropical Science Lab - 1 credit
SMFT 697: Special Topics - Tropical Science Lab - 1 credit

PROGRAM INFORMATION:

The purpose of this course is to offer a laboratory course that continues the knowledge base for SMFT 697: Special Topics - Tropical Ecology (3 cr.) taught by Dr. John Peters during Summer I, 2016. SMFT 697: Tropical Science Lab (1 cr.) is a stand-alone course that will focus on conducting laboratory exercises in the Amazon jungle. Laboratory activities will include content from chemistry, biology, and environmental science. Additional content on Peruvian educational system, culture, and language will be included. Students will visit an inner-city public school in Lima and a rural community school in the Amazon. One half day will be used to provide a community service project for a local village. This will be arranged by the Conservacion de la Naturaleza Amazonica del Peru, A.C. (CONAPAC).

A unique feature is learning the science of the Amazon, but also how to use that science in the classroom. Undergraduate pre-service teachers and science majors and graduate science and math for teachers, marine biology, and environmental studies students will be able to take one of the two courses. The one-credit course is the only requirement for this trip and can be taken separately from the graduate 3-credit course (SMFT 697: Special Topics - Tropical Ecology).

Students will be sleeping in huts, hiking in the jungle, and riding boats on rivers. Students will climb trees and walk on suspension bridges in the canopy.
