PROGRAM INFORMATION:

The program will provide College of Charleston students the opportunity to participate and enhance their knowledge and understanding of health, education, and business related issues through field experiences in urban and rural settings in Tanzania, East Africa. The students will do the following:
a) participate in medical outreaches in one to two rural communities;
b) volunteer as teaching assistants in elementary and middle school classrooms; and
c) spend time with community members in a poor urban setting to understand their "portfolios"..i.e. how do these people manage to live (educate, pay for health care, etc.) with $2 a day or less?

The students will be able to:
a) identify, articulate and reflect on their own experiences, values and beliefs in the context of their own cultural backgrounds;
b) compare and contrast their educational experiences with those of the children in the international context(s);
c) will develop a better understanding of political, historical, cultural and social issues that mitigate access to resources (education, healthcare, social services) in the international context;
d) demonstrate the ability to interact constructively with people from diverse/different cultures.
