PROGRAM INFORMATION

The College of Charleston spring semester program in Trujillo, Spain is designed for students who major or minor in Spanish, or who are interested in earning 12-15 credit hours in upper level Spanish; or for students from any academic discipline interested in developing fluency in Spanish while maintaining normal progress towards graduation. Classes are held in La Coria, a 17th century restored convent, from Monday through Thursday weekly, allowing students ample time to explore Spain.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

There are many opportunities for students while studying for the spring semester in Trujillo, Spain. One of the program highlights is that students will live with local Spanish families during their semester abroad. Living wiht families provides students a great opportunity to learn about daily life and culture in Spain, while improving their Spanish skills.

During the semester students will take two cultural program excursions. The first excursion is to Andalusia region of Spain, with visits to cities such as Seviilla, Granada, Cordoba, and Toledo. The second program excursion is to Madrid for several days where students visit museums and other cultural sites. Students will also have a spring break, which generally falls during Semana Santa, or Holy Week before Easter.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

- Interested students must have completed at least Spanish 202 prior to participating in the program.
- Students must have at least an overall 2.5 GPA
- Students must either already possess a valid passport of be able to obtain a valid passport

Dr. Carrillo Arciniega is an Associate Professor of Spanish in the Department of Hispanic Studies. His research interests include Hispanic Poetry, Philosophy, Rock in Spanish, Mexican Film, and Latin American Counterculture. He directed the Trujillo program in 2009, as well as the Summer 2016 program. Dr. Carrillo Arciniega is currently teaching SPAN 333: Mexican Film and SPAN 494: Latin American Poetry.
