PROGRAM INFORMATION

The College of Charleston offers students the opportunity to study with faculty from CofC and local Spanish faculty from the Universidad de Extremadura. The program is designed for students who are Spanish majors or minors interested in taking 12 hours of upper level Spanish or students interested in developing fluency in Spanish.

Trujillo is located in the Extremadura region of Spain, southwest of Madrid, about 60 miles from the border of Portugal. A thriving center of tourism with a rich historical past, Trujillo is the place of origin of many conquistadors, including the Pizarros. Caceres, a UN-designated World Heritage City and the site of the Universidad de Extremadura, lies less than an hour to the west of Trujillo.


PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

There are may opportunities for students while studying for the springl semester in Trujillo. Students will live with local Spanish families during their semester abroad. The families are selected by staff in Trujillo and most of the families have hosted CofC students in the past. Living with families provides students a great opportunity to learn about daily life and culture in Spain, while improving their Spanish language skills.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

-Students must have completed or be in the process of completing Spanish 202 prior to participation
- Students must have at least an overall 2.5 GPA
- Students must either already possess a valid passport of be able to obtain a valid passport

PROGRAM DIRECTORS

Dr. Viñas-de-Puig is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Hispanic Studies. His research area is linguistics, with a special focus on syntax, linguistic variation within Spanish, Catalan, and other Romance languages, and the results of language contact between Spanish and other indigenous and regional languages. In Fall 2017, Dr. Viñas-de-Puig is teaching SPAN 334: Advanced Grammar and Lexicon, LING 125: Introduction to Linguistics, and LING 260: Indigenous Languages of the Americas.

Dr. Antonio Pérez-Núñez is an Assistant Professor of Spanish and Linguistics in the Department of Hispanic Studies. His research interests include second language acquisition through writing and the study of intercultural competence in different learning contexts. He has recently taught SPAN 334: Advanced Grammar and Lexicon and SPAN 381: Introduction to Spanish Linguistics.
