Estimated Costs: In addition to the program fee, students will be charged for tuition and fees as follows:
* 2015-16 in-state tuition rate for four credits is $1,832 (plus Library, Technology and Part Time Fees)
* 2015-16 out-of-state tuition rate for four credits is $2380.00 (plus Library, Technology and Part Time Fees). The out of state tuition for classes associated with travel are discounted from the Fall and Spring rates.

Program Description

PROGRAM DATES:

This program will commence on CofC's campus on May 12. On May 18, program participants will travel with the program directors to Europe, and return to Charleston June 2.


COURSE INFORMATION:

Students take the following two courses:

HIST 241: Contemporary Europe - 3 credits
POLI 352: Geographies and Politics in the European Union - 3 credits


PROGRAM INFORMATION:

This is a new study abroad program at the College which will be taught at the College for one third of the time and on site in Saarland, Germany at the European Academy Otsenhausen, France, Luxembourg, and Belgium for the remaining two thirds of the time. Courses will focus on recent developments in Europe. Special attention will be paid to issues and problems facing Europeans today, including the economic impact of the European Union in a global economy, problems within the EU such as migration and immigration, minorities, human rights, the European monetary union, and regionalism and separatism.

Students will engage multiple academic experts, political leaders, and community advocates who will speak on European topics as the European Academy. Special excursions include visits to the EU in Brussels, the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg City, the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, the World War I memorial battlefield site of Verdun, the Maginot Line, the memorial battlefield sites of the Battle of the Bulge, and the historic city of Trier. Students will also engage in a service learning project in Germany.

Participants should expect a considerable amount of walking on some days.

Dr. Olejniczak is a historian of modern Europe and Director of the European Studies program. He has directed many study abroad programs in Germany, Belgium, and France, often conjunction with faculty from the School of Business. He was an invited professor at the University de Versailles-Saint Quentin. His teaching interests are in modern French history, the history of Paris, the history of the Second World War and European Studies.

Dr. Long's training is in European Studies with a B.A. and M.A. from the National University of Ireland. He has studied and lived in several European countries and has taught courses on the European Union and European politics at the College since 2002. From 2011-2013 he directed the College's fall study abroad program in Trujillo, Spain.
