Estimated Costs: In addition to the program fee, students will be charged for tuition and fees as follows:
* 2015-16 in-state tuition rate for four credits is $1,832 (plus Library, Technology and Part Time Fees)
* 2015-16 out-of-state tuition rate for four credits is $2380.00 (plus Library, Technology and Part Time Fees). The out of state tuition for classes associated with travel are discounted from the Fall and Spring rates.

Program Description

COURSE INFORMATION:

Students will be enrolled in BIOL 337: Invertebrate Zoology (4 credits).


PROGRAM INFORMATION:

This is a study abroad option of an upper-level course that is offered to biology majors. It is a core biology course and a requirement for marine biology majors. The course description is the following: "Classification, morphology, physiology, behavior and life histories of invertebrates. Laboratory work will emphasize the study of living material from the local fauna." We will spend two days of Maymester at Grice Marine Laboratory (James Island, SC) and then travel to Gerace Research Marine Station in San Salvador, Bahamas for 13 nights. This marine laboratory has all the appropriate research and teaching facilities for intensive field exploration, husbandry of some organisms, and dissecting microscopes. College of Charleston is an affiliate institution of Gerace Marine Laboratory. Each day, we will have a lecture in the morning for 1-2 hours, travel to the field for 3-4 hours, and then come back to dissect and examine animals. San Salvador is a small island with easily accessible marine (seagrass, coral reef, high-salinity inland lakes) and semi-terrestrial habitats (mangroves).

Students should be aware of the following physical activities: daily snorkeling and hiking for several hours at a time.

Dr. Sotka is a Professor of Biology who as worked on the ecology and evolution of marine organisms, especially invertebrates, for 20 years.
