Estimated Costs: In addition to the program fee, students will be charged for tuition and fees as follows:
* 2016-17 in-state tuition rate for six credits is $2,844 (plus Library, Technology and Part Time Fees)
* 2016-17 out-of-state tuition rate for six credits is $3,696 (plus Library, Technology and Part Time Fees). The out of state tuition for classes associated with travel are discounted from the Fall and Spring rates.

Students should also estimate the following out-of-pocket expenses (depending on their spending habits):
- Meals: up to $300
- Ground transportation (bus, subway, taxi, etc.): up to $50
- Books: approx. $100 for required textbooks
- Excursions not covered by program fee: up to $50
Program Description

COURSE INFORMATION:

Students take two courses from the following selection:

COMM 315: Ethical Communication - Conflict and Community (3 credits)
COMM 336: Addressing Problems in Context - Representation, Identity, and Culture (3 credits)
*COMM 481: Capstone in Communication - Experiencing and Investigating Communication and Culture Abroad - Destination Europe (3 credits)

*Students must take COMM 480 prior to COMM 481


PROGRAM INFORMATION:

Participants in this month-long program will study in Florence, Italy; Prague, Czech Republic; and Salzburg, Austria. Three classes are offered (students are required to take two). COMM 315 focuses upon communication ethics in relation to conflict and community. COMM 336 explores the relationship between communication and culture. COMM 481 is offered as a continuation of the capstone course for students who complete COMM $80 in Spring 2017. The capstone immerses students in three distinct European cultural traditions: Slavic, Bavarian, and Tuscan. As part of the program, students will tour the Mauthausen Concentration Camp, Prague's Jewish Quarter, and Florence's famous art galleries, as well as castles, museums, and other sites of cultural, historical, and recreational interest.

Students participating in this program should expect excessive walking at times, with steps indoors and hills outside. Not all sites are handicapped accessible.

Dr. Westerfelhaus has directed/co-directed ten CofC study abroad programs, and has visited multiple times each of the program's three destination sites. He spent one year living in Poland as a Fulbright Scholar.

Dr. Lacroix is Professor of Communication and teaches Cross-Cultural Communication both domestically and abroad. She has significant study abroad experience, having taught CofC students in Spain nine times since 2001 and has co-directed this program to Europe ten times, most recently in 2016.
