Program Description

COURSE INFORMATION

LACS 101: Introduction to Laticn American and Caribbean Studies - 3 credits
FYSE 111: Cross-Cultural Communication: Focus Latin America - 3 credits

PROGRAM INFORMATION

This FYE Learning Community links two courses, LACS 101 and FYSE 111, in order to provide a basic understanding of the region. Historical and contemporary issues affecting and transforming the Americas will be addressed while students develop an understanding of communication between/among people of different cultural backgrouns, specifically between the U.S. and Latin America, across a variety of contexts.

This Learning Community offers an optional one-week travel component to Cuba where students will benefit from first-hand experiences of daily life in the country. Based in Havana, the program will include visits to relevant sites such as the Old Havana or the Museum of the Cuban Revolution as well as excursions to other historic cities on the isalnd such as Trinidad and Santa Clara, allowing students to immerse themselves in the cultures and history of this unique country.


PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

- Students must be Freshmen
- Students must possess a valid passport, or be eligible to obtain a valid passport
-Program will include extensive walking at times with steps indoors and hills outdoors
-Students must maintain a 2.5 GPA or higher
(When entering GPA for this application, freshmen are instructed to enter 4.0 until they earn a GPA after their first semester at College of Charleston)

**Note: Unlike the 1 credit FYET Abroad Courses, this learning community fulfills the FYE graduation requirement**

Dr. Lola Colomina-Garrigós is a Professor of Hispanic Studies, with expertise in issues related to contemporary Spanish American literature and civilization & culture of Latin America and the Carribean. She has directed/co-directed five CofC study abroad programs, including the Trujillo, Spain and Santiago de Chile programs.

Dr. Celeste Lacroix is a Professor of Communication who specializes in cross-cultural exchanges. She has significant study abroad experience, having taught CofC students in Spain nine times since 2001; and, she has directed/co-directed ten other summer study abroad programs in Europe, most recently in 2016.
