Program Description

COURSE INFORMATION

FYE: Paris Up Close: The Usual and the Unexpected - 1 credit

PROGRAM INFORMATION

This course is designed for Freshmen students. The course will take students to the major historical and cultural institutions and buildings in Paris, historical and contemporary neighborhoods, significant lieux de memories and sites of significant historical events. The couse will explore the theme of hos the past meets the present and how history and memory interact in a major capital through a selection of primary sources, secondary readings, and films. There will be several pre-travel meetings.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

Students will visit such sites in Paris as museums, monuments, churches, parks, palaces, and homes of major cultural and politcal figures.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

- Students must already possess a valid passport, or must be eligible to obtain a valid passport
- Students must be Freshmen
-Students must maintain a 2.5 GPA or higher
(note when entering GPA for this application, freshmen are instructed to enter 0.0 until they earn a GPA after their first semester at College of Charleston)

Dr. Olejniczak is the Director of the European Studies program as well as the Director of the Master's Program in History. He has taught courses on French and European history, the History of Modern France, the Age of Enlightenment and modern Europe. He has directed over 15 study abroad programs in the past including the 2017 FYE Paris Up Close spring-break program.
