COURSE INFORMATION

FYET Spanish Vistas: Art, Architecture and Cuisine - 1 credit

PROGRAM INFORMATION

Students will be given an introduction to the geography and regions of Spain as well as a general overview of the country's rich cultural history. The class will study Spain's five greatest artists: El Greco, Velázquez, Goya, Picasso, and Dalí by examining the historical context in which they each painted and how their paintings reflect political, religious, and social truths of their day. Additionally, the class will cover the architecture of Hapsburg and Bourbon Madrid as well as that of Gaudí in Barcelona. Lastly, the class will be given a preview of eating in Spain with a focus on the food itself and the eating schedule and customs of the Spanish culture.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

- Students must already possess a valid passport or be eligible to obtain a valid passport
- Students must be Freshmen
-Lots of walking will occur on uneven pavements
-Students must maintain a 2.5 GPA or higher
(When entering GPA for this application, freshmen are instructed to enter 0.0 until they earn a GPA after their first semester at College of Charleston)

Professor Hanahan has taught at The College of Charleston since 1995 and has led two student programs to Spain and one to Mexico. This is her 6th year teaching in the FYE program, and she is very enthusiastic about sharing her love of Spain's people and culture with her students, especially incoming freshmen who might be experiencing thier first trip abroad.
