Program Description

The Safe Water Internship program seeks to encourage and motivate students to pursue international public health experiences. Funding for this program has been generously provided by the Gangarosa International Health Foundation and a CDC Foundation endowment established by the Gangarosa family for safe water and sanitation. Cost of travel, room & board, and in-state tuition is covered for a maximum of 2 students for summer 2015. Out-of-state residents are also encouraged to apply. However, please be aware that out-of-state students must pay approximately $800 for internship credit. This internship is expected to start at the end of May and conclude in July 2015.

The Jolivert Safe Water for Families project produces and distributes a branded version of CDC’s Safe Water System used to chlorinate water in rural Haitian homes. The program has been ongoing since 2002.

Activities throughout the summer internship include: household visits as part of an integrated field experience; activities that use safe storage containers as incentives for chlorine use; data entry into Excel; interviewing program staff; correcting the database and checking validity; overseeing project sites; and beginning data analysis.

Qualified applicants are required to have knowledge of and/or experience with Excel; basic knowledge of statistics; preferably have experience with database management and data entry; knowledge of Haitian Creole, French and/or Spanish is recommended but not required; willingness to adapt and operate in a low-resource setting; and prior experience in developing countries is also recommended but not required.

Online application due by 5:00 PM on March 27, 2015. A committee of Public Health faculty, Michael Ritter (CEO of DSI) and Dr. Gangarosa (Scholarship donor) will review applications. Decision will be announced in early April 2015.
