How to Apply  

Instructions for students:

  • Eligible students can apply for College of Charleston study abroad scholarships via the link below 
  • Students must have a completed Center for International Education study abroad application on-file (via AbroadOffice) for the term in which they are applying for the scholarship at the time of the scholarship deadline
  • Note that this is a common application form for the Center for International Education, Cain Family, and Anna B. Cox study abroad scholarships
  • Before you submit your application, make sure you understand the application requirements for each scholarship listed below
  • You will need to provide the faculty member who is completing the recommendation on your behalf your name, College of Charleston ID number, College of Charleston email, and names of the scholarships for which you are applying
  • You must list the names of the scholarship(s) for which you are applying within your personal statement
  • Only apply for the scholarship(s) for which you are eligible - ineligible candidates will not be considered
  • You will receive an email notification and confirmation once you have submitted your application
  • You will receive an email notification once the faculty member has completed their recommendation on your behalf
  • The application is best viewed on Mozilla Firefox, Safari, and Google Chrome internet browsers       

Instructions for Faculty:

  • Faculty members can submit their recommendations on behalf of a student(s) via the link below  
  • The Center for International Education scholarship only requires faculty members to submit a ranking for each student   
  • All other scholarships require faculty members to submit a written recommendation letter which he/she will upload in either MS Word for Adobe PDF format (faculty must also list the names of the scholarship(s) for which the student is applying within the written recommendation)  
  • Faculty must have the student's name, College of Charleston ID number, and College of Charleston email address in order to complete the recommendation form 
  • Note that this is a common recommendation form for the Center for International Education, Cain Family, and Anna B. Cox  study abroad scholarships
  • The application is best viewed on Mozilla Firefox, Safari, and Google Chrome internet browsers

Center for International Education

This is a general scholarship worth up to $1500 (summer) or $2000 (semester) for any type of approved study abroad program.  Criteria include academic merit, demonstration of financial need, a personal statement and a recommendation from two faculty members.  Apply at the links above.

    Cain Family International Scholarship

    This scholarship will support students spending a semester or more studying in non-English speaking destinations and cultures, with a strong preference to support students going to developing countries or countries outside of Western Europe.  Preference will be given to students enrolled in the Honors College, although any student may compete for the Cain Family International Scholarship as long as he/she holds a minimum 3.2 grade point average and has demonstrated financial need.  Apply at the links above.

    Huge Foundation Study Abroad Scholarship

    The Harry and Reba Huge Foundation Study Abroad Scholarship is designed to provide scholarships for a semester–long academic experience in Estonia.  The scholarship will help cover the cost of the study abroad program.

    Joe Milligan Australia Scholarship

    This scholarship is intended to assist a College of Charleston student with the costs of studying abroad for a semester in Australia.  Preference will be given to the student with the greatest demonstrated financial need and a 3.0 GPA or better.  Apply at the links above.

    Anna B. Cox Study Abroad in France Scholarship

    This scholarship is intended to support students studying in France on any type of approved study abroad program.  Preference shall be given to students with financial need and a minimum of 2.5 GPA.  The scholarship was created by the generosity of Boyce Cox in memory of his wife, Anna B. Cox, who loved traveling to France and experiencing French culture.  Apply at the links above.

    Nancy Elizabeth Brown Spain Scholarship

    This scholarship is intended to support students traveling to Trujillo, Spain on the College of Charleston Spring Semester study abroad program (note: students on affiliate programs are not eligible to apply).  Preference shall be given to students with financial need.     LCWA Scholarships

    Scholarships are available for declared majors and minors in the School of Languages, Cultures, and World Affairs.

    School of Business Knox Global Scholarships

    This scholarship is offered through the School of Business for pre-declared or declared School of Business majors. Preference given to applicants studying abroad with a CofC sponsored overseas program.

    Alumni Association Study Abroad Scholarship

    The Alumni Association offers two study abroad scholarships. One scholarship was created by Jeffrey A. Foster, the other established in honor of Henry Miller, both former chairs of the French Department. The student must be a full-time student at CofC and must participate in a minimum of two College of Charleston organizations. Student is or will be a part of an approved College of Charleston study abroad program to France.

    The College of Charleston is affiliated with several program providers that offer scholarships exclusively for the College's students.

    The following opportunities are also available:

    • American Institute for Foreign Studies (AIFS) - accepted students can apply for an affiliate grant.  For more information and to apply please visit their website.
    • Danish Institute for Study Abroad (DIS) - accepted students will receive the following discounts: $3000 off for a semester program; $300 off for a 3-week summer program; $400 off for a 4-week summer program; and $700 off each Architecture program
    • Institution for the International Education of Students (IES) - accepted students automatically receive the "public university grant" of $1500 for a semester program (this amount will increase to $2000 for the 2016-2017 academic year)
    • SAI Programs - accepted students receive discounts on their Rome and Florence "full programs"
    • The Education Abroad Network (TEAN) - accepted students will receive a $750 grant for Semester Australia/New Zealand program; a $500 grant for Asia programs; and a $150 grant for summer and internship programs. 

    Additional Scholarship Opportunities

    Boren Scholarship

    This federally funded scholarship is for students studying critical languages and in non-traditional locations (i.e. not Australia, New Zealand or Western-Europe). There is a campus nomination process for this scholarship. Contact CIE for more information.

    Gilman Scholarship 

    This federally funded scholarship is for students who are currently receiving the Pell Grant. Preference is given to students studying in non-traditional sites. This scholarship is available for any program lasting longer than 28 days in one country.  Contact CIE for more information. 

      Bridging Scholarship

      The Bridging Project offers scholarships to American undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Visit the Bridging Scholarship page for more information.

      Phi Kappa Phi Grant

      Open to any undergraduate student (you do not have to be a member) who meets the requirements.

      Studying in New Zealand Scholarship

      Education New Zealand and New Zealand tertiary institutions are supporting Generation Study Abroad students with excellence and travel awards. Visit the Studying in New Zealand Scholarship page for more information.

      Virginia B. Gourdin Scholarship

      The Virginia B. Gourdin Scholarship is a privately funded award created to support female College of Charleston students studying abroad in a credit-bearing summer program.  Students should have a 2.5 GPA and preference will be given to students studying in a Spanish-speaking country.       Benjamin Franklin Travel Grant

      The Benjamin Franklin Travel Grant targets outstanding Sophomore, Junior & Senior students who have a specific academic or professional project that they want to accomplish in France (studies, internship, specific visits…) and who are enrolled in an American university in a double major including one major in French.

      IIEPassport Study Abroad Funding

      This resource features detailed descriptions of hundreds of study abroad scholarships, fellowships, grants, and paid internships for U.S. undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate students, and professionals.

      Freeman-ASIA Scholarship

      Freeman-ASIA accepts applications from U.S. citizens or permanent residents studying at the undergraduate level at a two-year or four-year college or university who demonstrate financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia.

      Start the Adventure Scholarship

      STA Travel has created two (2) $2500 scholarships for students for a study abroad program. One scholarship will be awarded in August 2015 and the other in December 2015.
