COURSE INFORMATION: This Maymester program offers two courses: FREN 202 (Intermediate French in the West Indies, 3 cr), which completes the General Education requirement in foreign language, and FRCS 102 (Francophone Culture and Society in the West Indies, 3 cr), which counts toward the General Education humanities requirement. Students participating in this program can choose if they wish to enroll in one or both courses. PROGRAM INFORMATION: Students will embark on a three week adventure around the West Indies. We will fly into Dominica, a former French and British colony, to study the French history on this Nature Island and visit the Kalinago reserve, home of the last remaining descendants of the indigenous Carib. From Dominica we will make our way to Martinique, an overseas region of France, which will become our home away from home for two weeks. Students will take morning French classes in the capital of Fort-de-France, and participate in afternoon and weekend excursions to discover this Island of Flowers, from the mighty Mont Pelée to the pristine coral reefs of the Caribbean. Students will live with local host families during their time on Martinique. The final weekend will be spent on the impressive island of Saint Lucia, another former French colony, to synthesize all that's been seen over the past two weeks, and present final projects against a Caribbean blue backdrop. She has spent time living and working on various islands throughout the Caribbean, and this will be her fourth study program run in the French West Indies.
