Estimated Costs: In addition to the program fee, students will be charged tuition for their courses.

The out of state tuition for classes associated with travel are discounted from the Fall and Spring rates.

Scholarships up to $500 are available to support CofC degree seeking students. Eligibility is based on demonstrated financial need, academic merit, 2 faculty recommendations and a personal statement. The application can be found on the CIE website, under Study Abroad > Scholarships

Estimated out-of-pocket expenses are as follows:

Program Description


In Panama June 9-16


Students choose one course from the following:
REAL 360: The Panama Canal - Its Impact on Global Trade - 3 credits
TRAN 360: The Panama Canal - Its Impact on Global Trade - 3 credits


With the Panama Canal Expansion project now completed, global trade will be profoundly impacted in the areas of global logistics, distribution and transportation as well as the real estate development and infrastructure. The study tour will include lectures by global experts as well as on-site visits. The week-long stay in Panama will include visits to the existing Canal and the construction site for the expansion, international companies that have located in Panama, and new real estate developments that are a direct result of the increased trade due to the canal expansion.


-Students must have an overall GPA of 2.5
-Students must already possess a valid passport, or be able to obtain a valid passport


Dr. Kent Gourdin
Department of Supply Chain and Information Management

Dr. Kent Gourdin is a Professor and Director of the Global Logistics and Transportation Program in the School of Business. He is a career logistics/transportation person who has traveled extensively abroad and annually takes a student group to the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Dr. Gourdin has led this study abroad program previously.

Dr. Elaine Worzala
Department of Finance

Dr. Elaine Worzala is the Director of the Carter Real Estate Center. Her teaching interests include real estate principles, market analysis and investment/valuation. Her research interests include international real estate investments, particularly from the institutional investment community that is currently actively engaged in investing in the global real estate markets.

Dr. Gourdin and Dr. Worzala led this study abroad program in Summer 2014 and 2017.
