PROGRAM INFORMATION:

Sorrento is a real haven of peace for study and creativity, and it is not by chance that it has been, for more than three centuries, the destination of international artists, poets and musicians. The town, Torquato Tasso's birthplace, was also the residence for some time of Wolfgang Goethe, who found here the muse inspiring the composition of his famous "Parsifal," Ibsen who wrote "Ghosts" in Sorrento, Lord Byron, F. Cooper, I. Taine, Giacomo Leopardi, Albert Dumas, Giuseppe Verdi, Oscar Wilde and Friedrik Nietzsche who lived here finding inspiration for extraordinary works.

Students will study and reside at the Sant'Anna Institute (SASL) in Sorrento, in the Campania region. The institute overlooks Marina Grande, just a short walk from the center of Sorrento and enjoys commanding views of the Gulf of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. The town of Sorrento is small in size yet international and cosmopolitan in feeling. The town is known for its hospitality and is safe and easily walkable. Students will be able to visit important historical and archaeological sites. They will also participate in different cultural activities in Sorrento and in the nearby areas. The program will also provide three guided tours: Archaeological Museum of Naples, Pompeii, and Amalfi Coast.

The students will have the option of being immersed for four weeks in an intensive language program studying two Intermediate Italian courses, ITAL 201 and ITAL 202, or Italian food and an independent study, ITAL 328 and ITAL 329. The seminar format will enable students to participate actively in the analysis of food, and consider the contemporary cultural context in which it's presented. Throughout the independent course of study, students will have the opportunity to explore and study topics of Italian culture that are particularly interesting for them. This program will also provide four excursions with private bus, private guide, and entrance tickets when necessary to Pompeii, Naples, Capri, and the Amalfi Coast.

Students will leave Charleston on June 16, 2018, and arrive in Naples June 17. They will be picked up by a bus provided by the Sant'Anna Institute that will take them directly to Sorrento. A pick-up from Sorrento and drop-off at the Naples airport will also be arranged for their return.
