Program Description

Founded around 1,500 years ago, the town of Tübingen is inseparably connected to the university. Even in the 17th century it was said that when the university is successful, the town also flourishes. The university employs more than 8,000 people and is thus by far the biggest employer in town. Tübingen’s ratio of about 26,000 students to its population of around 86,000 inhabitants gives it the highest “student density” of any university city in Germany; in addition, more than 10% of these students are citizens of foreign countries. As with most universities in Germany, the buildings and facilities of the University of Tübingen are scattered throughout the town, as opposed to having a central campus gathered around one location.

Eligibility: Students must have a 2.75 GPA.

Program Dates: Students may attend the University of Tübingen for the spring semester (April to July), or academic year.

Cost: Students pay College of Charleston tuition and fees to study at the University of Tübingen. Housing fees are paid directly to Tübingen. Most CofC financial aid will apply.

Housing: All rooms in student accommodation are single occupancy, with kitchen facilities. The University of Tübingen does not have university owned accommodation, but private and public organizations provide housing for about 3,400 students

Subjects Offered: There is an optional, but highly recommended, five week Language and Orientation course before classes begin. Students may take classes sponsored by the foreign student office and/or may register for regular lectures and seminars in various departments of the university. Classes are offered in subjects such as Theology, Law, Economics and Business Administration, Philosophy, Social and Behaviors Sciences, Modern Language, History, Cultural Sciences, Math, Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy, Biology and Geosciences.

Credit: The courses taken at the University of Tübingen must be pre-approved by the appropriate academic department for potential transfer credit.
